Several things to know:
1) you can’t rent a car
2) mopeds are dangerous & discouraged. (recent tragic events – death of a 1/2 of a traveling family- mom and child died, father and child lived).
3) Cabs are expensive but easiest and necessary at night. $20 each way. (parish to parish)
4) Buses are very reasonable and once you understand the schedule they are easy. They don’t run late. Some of the stops are difficult to spot.
5) Road signs are pretty hard to see and not all roads are labeled. You won’t have a GPS.
6) they drive on the left so everything you are used to is backwards, including walking. You should walk against traffic but here anything goes.
7) streets are narrow and walking can be scary. We walked a lot more than most people.
8) The bus drivers – it’s hit or miss whether you get a friendly one. Always say thank you, never hop on a bus until everyone has hopped off. Do not sit in the front section reserved for elderly and children. NEVER get on the bus with a wet bathing suit. The locals on the bus are more helpful with getting you to your correct stop rather than the bus drivers.
9) ferry – take to Hamilton from shipyard. Bus pass covers the ferry. I think it can take you to St. George.
10) best thing is to find someone that knows the island and take you around. We met this guy named Bermuda Mike that has his own minivan and can custom a trip for you. He and his drivers know the island and tell you all the great stories along the way. Bermudait@hotmail.com
11) we also did the Hidden Gem tour. Highly recommend it! Read my review in trip advisor. You are taken to places on the island you would never see otherwise. The secret was to book this outside of a cruise ship. Hidden Gems of Bermuda Ltd.
12) there are tons of beaches to go to especially along south shore, however Horseshoe Bay is extremely crowded. We recommend Elbow Beach instead. You can snorkel on the beach, rent a chair and umbrella and get served drinks/lunch, there is a shower there, and nice restaurant for dinner.
