When I reflect on last year there was one experience that brought me back serenity and peace.

For many years my daughter has participated in mission trips and last year I decided to go with her.

Who knew that a mission trip would give me a better gift than I gave in return. I arrived wound tight, stressed out from work, trying to finish up all the loose ends, and then focus on the mission work at hand. I had no idea what to expect other than I knew I was going to be outside my comfort zone. I am not a camper and one of the sites did not have hot water, the beds were super uncomfortable, and the bugs (many large) freely flew about. I didn’t like that part at all.  Dishes were hand washed in cold water, if anyone knows how much of a germaphobe I am, they understood how much I had to really stretch outside of my comfort zone.
One of my jobs was to photograph and report back to our families following our journey. I tried not to focus on the living conditions and focus on the work site, our progress and capture our bonding moments as a team as well as show how beautiful the area was that we saw in Costa Rica.
As I am quietly complaining about our conditions, I realize this is how these people live. They make it work, they are happy and appreciative of what they have.
What I ended up learning is that things don’t need to be so complicated and stressful! You work hard and you take a break. You will get it done, eventually. It’s so hot there you can’t get it done as fast, you have to stop and take a break.  Many Americans found themselves overheated and ill if they approached the project like they would at home.  They were forced to slow down!

Yes it is awesome to have better living conditions but it doesn’t have to be a mansion. Simple 4″ mattresses and hot water can make a huge difference.
Pura Vida! The simple life!
I will strive to remember to keep things simple and find peace!
